International African American Museum Opening
After more than two decades of planning, fundraising, and construction efforts, the new International African American Museum (IAAM) in Charleston will now welcome visitors.
Located on the Charleston waterfront, The International African American Museum will be located on the site where Gadsden’s Wharf, the disembarkation point of up to 40% of all American enslaved persons, once stood. The International African American Museum will explore cultures and knowledge systems retained and adapted by Africans in the Americas, and the diverse journeys and achievements of these individuals and their descendants in South Carolina, the United States, and throughout the African Diaspora.
